Fishing Blog

Well it has been almost 6 months since I made an entry in the blog. Well I can definitely say that it hasn't been because I haven't been fishing. I have been to Michigan and Iowa for month long fishing trips. I have made another trip to a reservoir in Idaho. I am planning other trips to vacation with my Grandsons. WOW! Who would have thought that retirement could be so great! My only problem is finding enough time to do everything. I will try to do better.

I will recap my Michigan trip by saying that the perch fishing in Canada was absolutely fantastic. I plan to go back when the fishing can be done from a boat. The picture above shows Slim and John with a days catch. There is some 13 inch perch in those buckets. There was a couple of trips made to Lake St Clair but the fishing was very slow. I did manage to keep up my walking and didn't gain any weight during my stay.
Woah...all these new directions and all I wanted to do was create a new post??? Oh well ...  I have lots of time to "kill', humm seems as though I created an italic version of my typing?? There i figured out how to type regular...oh my this is  too much for an Ole Farte to digest. All I wanted to do was too visit my blog site, and maybe post a new photo or two. Can this be so hard? No ...I won't quit! I may be mentally handicapped but I am not a quitter. So here goes...I posted some photos on fb so I will just use them here. That should be easy ....right?

This is an Osprey. She/he is an amazing bird. How do you tell which sex a bird is? Any who...it is occupying a nest above a pond that I visit daily...at least when the gate is open. Since the river has been flooding the pond it has been closed only one day. This morning during my visit to the pond I was the witness to the Osprey getting a drink from the pond.....what is so unusual about that you ask? Well she was doing it while in flight! Sorta like skimming across the water at low level and putting her beak in the water and barely breaking the surface with it. She/he then flew back up to the nest and resumed position on it ... usually signifying that they are warming the eggs in the nest. From the angle I can view the nest and I took this photo I can't tell if there are any eggs in the nest.....but one can only assume that there are. Sadly I didn't have my camera at ready when the Osprey got a drink from the pond. So you'll just have to take my word for it. Sorta like a used car salesperson saying that it is a great car...trust me!
Well I did take a photo of the Syringa trees/bushes around the pond. They seemingly can to life..bloom..over night!

Sorta pretty aren't they? It is the Idaho State Flower. Why in the world would I be at a muddy ole pond taking photos of a tree/bush? Well only one reason could attract me to such a place...
FISH....even the steady rain didn't deter my efforts to secure a limit of very nice rainbow trout from stocked  pond. I had the place to myself ... my thoughts were never interrupted by any other fisherman catching any of "my" fish! I had the pond to myself! It was a glorious day. I left after catch'n my limit!

13 MARCH, 2018

It got to 65 degrees here today. It was partly cloudy most of the day so it didn't feel that warm. I too a walk with my camera around town and took some photos of the new flowers showing up in people's yards. I really enjoy getting out an taking photos of the new flowers. I use it for an excuse to get some exercise. Feel free to share the photos and if you want an original file just ask and I will send it too you. Enjoy. Spring is here! At least until the next snow storm!!!!

It is with very mixed emotions that I start my "blog" writing again....it seems as though I have failed miserably at maintaining it. I hadn't written anything since 2012. I can find a variety of reasons for not writing ..... but none of them would present the real reasons why....suffice to say that I simply didn't. How can a causal click on a bookmark Popsie excite me enough to start again? Maybe it was the realization of those lost memories coming back to life for a brief instant that accomplished the impossible. How do I re-start....I can't even remember how to make an entry it has been so long since I have done it. You know what they say about Ole Fartes??? Just give them 15 minutes and they will forget how to tie their shoes!

Let's give this a try.... 3/11/2018 .... that is a blog entry for yesterday. What exciting event happened yesterday? I drove up and went ice fishing at Deyo Reservoir....well sort of ice fishing. How do you go ice fishing but not go out on the ice? Well when the ice is not safe enough o hold a fat Ole Farte from falling though is when! The lake was still ice covered...
but as you can see from the photo there was a fishing dock that extended out into the reservoir. I have fished from it during the summer so there was no reason why I couldn't fish from there today. Well to make a long story shorter....I drilled a hole off the edge of the dock and fished from the dock! The stocked rainbow trout was hungry and during the beautiful sunny afternoon I caught my limit of small stocked rainbow trout.

I guess that I find it sorta satisfying to write again about my adventures.....well at least it takes up some of "free" time that I seem to have on my hands. I'm not promising anything but maybe...just maybe...I might talk myself into doing this again! Maybe tomorrow I'll write about the spring flowers...

9 February, 2012

My posting ability has really suffered. It is hard to keep track of all the things that i want to do. Well after going fishing yesterday I realized that a diary of my fishing activities would be helpful int he future to determine what time of the year different things are happening. This will be an attempt to do that. I am experimenting with the format and will try to make it easy to read and determine the highlights.

TROUT - The forcus of today's fishing trip was to catch some trout for the smoker and to take Duane's boat on a run to check the recently maintained engine. The engine worked great. He didn;t bring his depth finder which proved to be a mistake. The trout fishing was very slow! We managed to catch a limit after 4 hours of hard fishing. We caught a tagged fish (10.5 in rainbow) in Canyon Creek. The best bait was a black Rat Finke with a couple maggots fished deep with a split shot. Trout seemed to be very deep and scattered. If you caught one you looked for more. I caught one fish on a spinner with worms.

Kokannee - There was 4 boats fishing for Kokannee in the mouth of Canyon Creek. We need to explore and find out why so many was fishing on a very overcast and cold day. There was one boat trolling for trout across from the boat launch. They hooked and landed a steelhead (about 5 pounds) . They appeared to be trolling large plastic grubs.

Duane collected a boat load of rocks and we called it a day after catching the last trout.

IOWA 2011

I arrived early in October as the fall colors just reached their full colors. The harvest was just starting when I arrived so I was kept busy from dawn to dark every day. The weather was great as the
temperature was warm and the skies stayed clear. There in fact had been a very dry summer. The spring had been wet and some of the crop went in the ground very late.

Photos show the timber just west of Joel's house.

Every morning we started of by feeding the calves
and bred heifers back at Judy's. The sky was
usually just getting light so most of the sunrise photos that I took are taken in this area. The sunrises were spectacular. I need to learn more about my camera in order to capture some of the brilliant colors that occurred jn the morning. I am sure it is the high amount of particulate material in the air which provide the brilliant colors. Still other mornings the aircraft provided an interesting pattern in the sky of their "

The harvest of the soybeans and corn was the main priority during the first weeks in Iowa. Donald would drive the combine and I would drive the tractor pulling the empty wagons to the field being harvested and the full wagons to be unloaded. This photo shows the combine with one of the grain wagons in the back ground. The soybeans were all hauled to the Fremont Elevator where they were weighed and unloaded. The trip to town was between 3-5 miles depending on the field being harvested location. The only problem was one flat tire on a wagon.

Friday the 13th - 13 May, 2011

Finally a warm day! It was a bright sun that greeted us at the Dworshak boat launch. We had chosen to get a late start and it turned out to be a very good decision. The temperature was already into the upper 40's. The sun was bright as we motored away from the dock. Our first stop was a short distance up the reservoir where a small stream dropped into the reservoir on the west side. The reservoir was still over a 100 feet below full pool. The fish cooperated at the first stop and we had 7 nice rainbow in the bucket. As we motored along the shoreline with the trolling motor I was excited when a Huge Smallmouth bass followed my lure up to the boat! He made a swirl at the lure before leaving!! Duane hooked up to a big fish on his jig/worm outfit. The battle was on! After staying deep and out of sight for a short time. Duane got him up to the surface and we discovered that he had a big "Bugle Mouth Trout" (better know as a sucker).

We then motored up to Freeman Creek where the bass was more active. The water temp was 52 degrees on the surface. The sun was warming up the water already. Duane caught a nice 2 lb smallmouth bass on a jig/worm combination before we motored to the next spot. I managed to catch a couple small ones on a crappie jig/worm combination. I was having the best luck with a red headed motor oil brown crappie jig on a 1/16th ounce jig.
The action picked up in Canyon Creek for a short time but after landing several bass and one crappie the action quit. It was hard to leave the spot but no more fish would take our offerings.
Additional stops were made in Canyon Creek, Indian Creek and back at the small drainage just west of the boat launch. I snapped a few pictures as we left the last spot and headed to the boat dock.
It was a beautiful day and the temperature was over 70 degrees when we quit for the day. We had a great fish fry that night with fresh smallmouth fillets the main ingredient. I must caution folks that the Annis house is not the place to learn how to play dominos!!!
